About Our City

We have a growing economy that incorporates the best of the past and the future, supported by a stable City government committed to supporting thriving businesses and citizens in an affordable and inclusive community.

Welcome to New Bedford, Massachusetts – a historic port city with a population of more than 100,000, where culture, innovation, creativity, and opportunity converge. Our rich maritime heritage is matched only by our forward-thinking vision for the future.

Situated within the Providence-Warwick-New Bedford MSA of some 1.6 million people, we are the nation’s number one fishing port with a vibrant and historic downtown and impressive infrastructure with additional capacity. We are leaders in building the American offshore wind industry and are fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship at every level.

New Bedford is a strategic hub between Cape Cod and major population centers to the east, including the ability to transport products to the New York City market via I-195/I-95, as well as to Boston and other parts of the New England market via I-140. We are 56 miles to Boston, only 30 miles to Providence and a quick ferry ride or flight to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. New Bedford and Boston are also connected by passenger rail.

The elongated geography of the city (New Bedford is as long as the island of Manhattan) also means that many of our neighborhoods offer the chance to live within a short walk, bike or drive to the waterfront or a beach. New Bedford has great neighborhoods, parks, and dozens of festivals and community events. Our location also provides easy access to the more rural landscape of the region, including small historic towns, coastal farms, and a wide range of recreational opportunities.

Live, Work, and Thrive in New Bedford.
