Mediumstudio's philanthropy recognized in small business award

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – New Bedford design company, mediumstudio, was selected by the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce as its 2011 Small Business of the Year in June.
The award was presented June 2 at a special edition of the chamber’s Good Morning SouthCoast! business series. Keri Cox, mediumstudio communications director and Hannah Haines, mediumstudio creative director and senior designer, accepted the award.
Keri and John Cox began mediumstudio in 2006 and have since grown the company’s client list to more than 50 companies including Southcoast Health System, Zeiterion Theatre, WHALE, New Bedford Ocean Explorium and The Regency.
A full service design studio, mediumstudio provides high end product for print, internet and video as well as a range of marketing, public relations and project management services.
“Mediumstudio is small in number, but large in passion for making New Bedford a great place to live, work and play,” said Jim Rattray, Vice President of Marketing & Public Affairs at Southcoast Health System who nominated the company for the award. “They are driven by a philanthropic mission and specialize in the support of non-profit organizations and the creative economy.”
In addition to being a busy design company, mediumstudio is also a socially conscious workplace. The studio is pet friendly, hosts a weekly yoga class taught by Be Yoga and runs the Garage; a home for artist work space, band rehearsal space, bagpipe lessons, screen printing, hand-crafted fishing lure production, a homeschool classroom and gallery/performance space for AHA! Nights. Last year the studio donated upwards of $100,000 in pro bono services as well as serving on numerous boards and committees that aim to improve tourism and commerce in New Bedford.
“As we all know, our small business men and women are the real drivers of job creation in our state and country. In every past recession it has been these bold entrepreneurs, who take real risks in pursuing their dreams of owning their own business, that have kick-started our economy with new jobs,” said Roy Nascimento, chamber president and CEO at the breakfast event.
The chamber selection committee looked for companies who have balanced success with a strong commitment to the community. Each nominee was rated based on five criteria: number of employees, staying power, growth, social responsibility and innovation.
