New Bedford State Pier gets $1M for improvements

statepierNEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Massachusetts recently announced $1 million in improvements at the New Bedford State Pier.
The money will allow the pier to handle more fresh produce, allowing businesses to grow.
New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell took NBC 10 on an exclusive tour of the pier Monday. We climbed aboard international vessel Summer Meadow to tout the growth of the city’s famous port.
“New Bedford is known all over the country as the country’s largest commercial fishing port. But we’re seeing growth in not only fishing, but in many other lines of business,” Mitchell said.
The state announced last week that it awarded the site $1 million for capital improvements. A 30,000-square-foot warehouse will be retrofitted with refrigeration, allowing the port to take in American produce in addition to the Canadian goods it already processes.
The sheer size of some of the vessels that do business in New Bedford is pretty amazing. For example, Summer Meadow is about 150 yards long. That’s about the size of a football field and a half.
