Applicants Sought for City Youth Summer Jobs

City Youth Can Apply for Summer Jobs Starting Friday
NEW BEDFORD — Much earlier than in past years and due to increased demand, New Directions Southcoast Inc. will begin accepting applications for summer job programs starting Friday Feb. 6 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the Greater New Bedford Career Center, 618 Acushnet Ave.
Applications will continue to be available from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Career Center until all applications have been distributed. Applications will not be distributed before 2:30 in the afternoon to accommodate school dismissal schedules.
At the Friday session, there will be a brief orientation on the application process. Youths must be present to get the applications and parents are encouraged to attend.
New Directions officials said the application period is significantly earlier than the previous annual late March application date. This change is due to the increase in activity at the Career Center and the growing number of youth seeking summer employment.
New Directions provides subsidized employment opportunities to eligible youth ages 14-21 who live in New Bedford, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Acushnet, Freetown, Lakeville, Marion, Wareham and Rochester.
Funding to support subsidized employment is made available through contracted services with the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board for state and federal funds.
All youth are required to return completed applications and supportive documents within a specified time period and meet eligibility requirements to be considered for enrollment in the program. The number of applications is limited, so interested youth are encouraged to begin the application process as early as possible.
