NBEDC receives $10,000 grant

NEW BEDFORD — Bristol County Savings Charitable Foundation presented the New Bedford Economic Development Council with a $10,000 grant Wednesday for updated technology.
Among those on hand for the presentation at City Hall were Mayor Jon Mitchell; Patrick J. Murray, president and CEO of Bristol County Savings Bank, and Matt Morrissey, the executive director of NBEDC.
“Bristol Community Savings Bank has done some great things and today we are here to announce another,” said Mitchell as he took to the podium.
The NBEDC is a nonprofit that helps coordinate economic development in the city. According to Morrissey, there has been a “substantial lag” in dealing with its large loan portfolio, which includes many local small businesses. “The new software allows us to service those loans much more rapidly,” he said after the conference.
“The bank has decided investing in New Bedford is good for their bottom line and a responsible thing to do for the community,” said Mitchell, calling the bank a “terrific corporate citizen.”
“We have real needs here in New Bedford and Bristol County has stepped up for our nonprofits,” he said. “When we grow jobs, good things happen.”
“We are a community bank and a mutual bank; there are no stockholders,” said Murray. “We look at the community as being our stockholders; we give back to the community which has been good to us.”
Later in the morning, the foundation held a second presentation at its New Bedford location at 1307 Ashley Blvd. There it awarded $32,000 to five local nonprofits: The Schwartz Center; Alma Del Mar Charter School; Girl Scouts of Eastern MA; Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board and Junior Achievement of SE MA Inc.
