Two local women set out to create products to help ease the burden on overworked teachers and ended up with a new way to connect with the students.

When she set out to devise a better bulletin board design, she was joined by longtime friend, Cathy Travers. Together they formed A Teaching Tree and began developing simple, effective lesson enhancers.
Their interactive bulletin boards present visual and tactile lessons that engage the students while furthering perception of a vital premise. The lessons can be thought provoking, as with the Pick a President board, or fun, as with the character-driven Math Facts boards. The model’s innocuous presentation is deceiving. Students are immediately interested and forget they are learning.
Beyond this, the bulletin boards come as complete kits containing everything the teacher needs for their assembly. Background paper, push pins, lessons — it’s all in one bag. No more shopping at different stores for supplies and then making up a lesson plan. It’s already done — right down to the final assessment sheets.
The new line is small but hugely effective. The method capitalizes on the student’s inherent interest, allowing the objectives to be absorbed virtually unnoticed.
Expecting to launch its next line in December, the company has several new concepts on the drawing board for 2009. The expanding line will include time saving and work enhancing helpers, such as timers and aprons, but focus will continue to be the development of new boards.
